Blogging Solidarity

I´m currently snowed under with a rather tricky case but I´ll pop my head up to post links to Septic Isle, Chicken Yoghurt, Grandmother Goose & the Grauniad.

If it is true that they have broken no libel laws and have merely linked to sites that disapprove of this man as Iain suggests I cannot see why the webhost have given in to Schillings.

Furthermore, if they ventured an opinion that he isn´t someone Arsenal should be doing business with, as Iain suggests, again I can´t see the problem. I may say that West Ham should stay away from these Icelandic fellows because biscuits are bad for one´s teeth.

I know very little about Mr. Usmanov. He may well be a fine, upstanding member of the Uzbeki community. Indeed, he may be at the vanguard of freedom of speech. He may open doors for women, may be generally kind to animals and may be good with children. I do not know about the allegations that Craig Murray and others may or may not have made (I cannot comment on their content as the websites have been removed). I would worry, however, that a leading London lawyers seems to have got leading blogs removed by leaning on their webhost.

Craig Murray is a prominent man and his blog was read by a large number of people. It seems a little sad and strange that this site has been taken down without anything being proven in a court of law. Mr. Murray may well have committed libel, his content may well have been defamatory but I´m not sure the best way around this is for a lawyers to, apparently at least, put pressure on his webhost.

If you put Usmanov's full name in front of blogspot.com, you'll get a mirror of Murray's original post which started all of this.

John Major sued among others the wholesale distributor of a newspaper that suggested that he had an affair with a lady caterer, who did the buisness at no10. How can a distributor be responsible for a publications content, is the van maker, fuel supplier, printing ink maker, electricity supplier and every ancillary company including the vat and tax man responsible. Somehow your profession has to set a limit on where blame stops.

ps Stop letting work interfere with your postings, get your priorities right.

Alisher Usmanov may or may not be a vicious thug, criminal, racketeer, heroin trafficker and accused rapist.

But if I had to choose between the word of Craig Murray, former British Ambassador to Uzekistan, and a man who communicates with the world through libel lawyers, I know who would get my vote.

I seem to recall that the late Robert Maxwell was a great exponent of the art of silencing comment about him through skilfull use of expensive lawyers and the laws of libel...

And look what a fine upstanding fellow he turned out to have been!
