In one newspaper, Brown wants to bring in tougher race hate laws in light of the Nick Griffen decision.
In another, Labour seem to be worrying that voters are deserting them for the BNP. Coincidence?
Don't get me wrong I think that Griffen and his hanger-on are beyond contempt but I believe passionately that we should be able to say what the fuck we please, even if that does upset other people.
I think that we should show these people up for the racist thugs they are by by taking them on in robust debate.
I believe that we should show them for the dangerous idiots they are rather than trying to deny them a voice, pushing them underground, making them martyrs and giving credence to their conspiracy theories.
I believe that every citizen in this country has a right to air their views, no matter how repugnant I find those views or, indeed, the majority of people find those views. Let them publish but when they do let us use our talents to rip them apart.
The British people, over-taxed, over-worked and under-valued as we may be, are a generally sensible bunch. Often in court I am struck by the wisdom of my fellow citizens, we should trust their judgement.
Despite the worried rants of media-whoring ministers, I do not believe the BNP are a credible threat to the democratic process simply because I do not believe that many people in this nation find the vile brand of politics they peddle attractive.
Some of our number will vote for the BNP (as is their right) as they believe the BNP are the best party for government. Some of our number will vote for the BNP (as is their right) as a protest. The overwhelming majority will not be convinced by the BNP - the spotlight of public ire and the oxygen of debate will stifle this party far better than bringing in badly-written and hastily packaged laws to limit what they can say.

It's a fundament. That's it. Free speech.
Exactly. Speech is either free or it isn't. If you're not allowed to say certain things - to speak freely - then it isn't. Full stop.
It's like that Channel 4 "debate" recently, "Are Muslims threatening freedom of speech?", in which the bloke arguing that they aren't said that "absolute" freedom of speech is offensive and must be curtailed. So: a Muslim, on that very programme, threatens freedom of speech. Case closed.
And the audience voted "no".
We're fucked, I tell ya. Totally screwed.
The BNP have been given publicity they could not buy because this Government are tossers and see them as a political threat...that's distinctly different from being a political threat, but the BNP are taking votes mainly from the old Labour core vote, and in increasing numbers.
They are being fed the publicity and support because this Government doesn't have the balls to tackle the disease of political correctness in a rational manner, though Straw tried with the veil issue...but it soon fizzled out.
We either have freedom of speech or we don't..and I do not believe it should be curtailed in any way to pacify the whims and delicate sensibilities [sic] of minorities that have no wish to integrate into our society.
It's a slippery slope and the slope angle has been growing more inclined in recent years, and feeding the BNP.
Afternoon, RS. A completely non-current affairs related query for you. Have you- or, indeed, anyone else reading- updated to 'Blogger Beta' yet? I'm having all sorts of difficulties with it. Every time I publish a new post, I'm presented with a message saying blogger was unable to complete the request. However when I view my blog it has, in fact, been posted.
Any suggestions?
Not to worry. Thanks anyroad.
I've had a look on the forums and it seems I'm not the only one.
Newell had a spell in my home town of Aberdeen years ago. I don't remember any faux pas like this, though. I expect we had enough to worry about.
I agree we should be able to say what we want, when we want to. The PC brigade bend over backwards to placate the over sensitive muslims, and only succeed in fucking the rest of us, who are tied by trite and stupid legislation that helps no one!.

I didn't see the debate you cited but the title of it seems to load the dice somewhat. I am as concerned as anyone at the way muslim radicals seem to be able to spout even worse claptrap than Nick Griffin without being prosecuted but that does not mean that all muslims are guilty of this, so I would have been inclined to vote against the proposition as well.
let's fill a huge boat with gold, invite all the extremist muslims and BNP to load themselves up and then sink the thing in Le Harve.
It is the only solution.
Amen. Long Live Free Speech. And fingers crossed for common sense.
